When and how did skinny teenagers gain weight?

I’m just wondering and also trying to figure out what things to avoid as I get older. Since I was 12, I’ve been counting calories and dealing with eating problems and not feeling good about my body, which can be really tiring sometimes. So, it’s important for me to break out of the cycle of eating too much, feeling bad, and then restricting, and to develop good habits instead.

I’m also curious because I’m a bit bigger than my friends (I’m at a healthy weight, but many of them are really small), and I’ve noticed that some of them have parents who are overweight or obese. So, I’m wondering if it’s common for skinny teenagers to gain weight later in life.

Donna, It’s straightforward to grasp that body development takes time, influenced by factors such as diet and genetics. Many individuals, both male and female, are slender until they undergo puberty. Puberty brings about changes such as weight gain and, in males, broader shoulders and increased muscle mass.

Me and my brother used to be the skinniest kids in our school. Thankfully, I managed to gain some weight over the years. Still, when I was 19, I weighed about 64kg at 178cm with hardly any muscle mass. I was what you might call skinny fat—big belly and spaghetti arms. I looked pretty silly. All I did was play video games all day, and it showed.

But the gym changed everything for me. I didn’t expect much when I signed up, but it became my biggest passion. And once I got addicted to working out, I knew I had to get my diet in order too.

Now, I weigh 75kg with a decently low amount of body fat. I look better than I ever have before, and my current goal is to reach the 80s.

Back in my mid-20s, I hated summer because I felt too self-conscious to wear shorts and a t-shirt. Now, I can’t wait for summer so I can show off my progress.

I began gaining weight after I began eating junk food, consuming alcohol, and stopped exercising.
