Zoloft and Weight Loss Experiences?

Hey everyone,

Curious if anyone’s noticed weight loss while taking Zoloft? I’ve seen it mentioned here and there, but not sure how common it is. Would love to hear how it’s affected others.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I’ve been on Zoloft myself and, honestly, it didn’t make me lose weight. Some folks say it’s possible, but it seems pretty rare. For me, it was more about feeling better overall. Always good to check with your doc to see how it might affect you.

SSRIs have been shown to affect a number of different things, and the evidence is not entirely conclusive. However, they have been known to affect serotonin receptors, which may increase cravings for carbohydrates, as well as the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which are produced by fat cells in the body and tell the brain when you’re full and hungry, respectively. You can practically become leptin resistant throughout a weight gain stage, which makes it increasingly difficult to feel full.
Having said that, it doesn’t cause weight gain on its own. Since thermodynamics still holds true, there is usually another element at play.
Wellbutrin is probably a wise choice but consult your physician. Wellbutrin has the ability to lower stress and increase dopamine, which can somewhat suppress hunger. Although almost every SSRI I took made me suicidal, I was on it for a brief period of time and had a respectable experience. Even though I’m no longer taking any medication, at the time Wellbutrin seemed the lesser of all the evils.
