Does lexapro make you lose weight?

My doctor prescribed Lexapro for my anxiety and panic attacks. I’ve been hesitant to start taking it for months due to fears of side effects, particularly weight gain. I’m a 21-year-old woman, and I’ve always had a big appetite since childhood. Although I was overweight in high school, I’ve since lost over 40 lbs and feel much more confident and happy with my body. However, due to increased anxiety over the past year, I’ve gained about 10 lbs because I tend to eat emotionally. Currently, I’m actively working to lose those 10 lbs.

The severity of my anxiety and panic attacks has reached a point where I’m finding it difficult to leave my house, and I know I need to start taking Lexapro soon. This situation feels like a double-edged sword for me. Despite my doctor’s reassurances, I’ve heard concerning stories about weight gain with Lexapro, with some people gaining as much as 30 lbs in a year. My biggest fear is returning to my high school body weight. However, living with frequent panic attacks is also unbearable. I wish I didn’t have to choose between the two.

Has anyone had positive experiences with this medication? Any success stories to share?
