How do you manage eating out with family and not ruining your diet?

So as the title says, I’ve noticed that a big hurdle for me sticking to my diet is that we eat out or get takeout about twice a week. I know the obvious answer is just not to eat out, and I do try to eat at home when my husband suggests going out. But the real issue is, how do I handle being at the restaurant and sticking to my diet without drawing attention?

For example, today I had a light lunch and wasn’t super hungry later. But my family is going out tonight, and now I’m caught in this awkward place. Do I order something small like soup? My husband tends to question me about my choices, thinking I’m back on some diet kick, which makes me anxious. I want to enjoy time with them without the pressure or needing to explain why I’m not eating much. Any advice?

I usually order a full meal and just mentally divide it into half or even thirds. I eat my portion there, and the rest becomes leftovers. This way, if your husband asks, you can honestly say you ate but also saved some for later.

Planning the rest of your day around it helps. If you’re hungry around 3 PM after a light lunch, eat something small so you still have enough room to enjoy the night out. A can of tuna or a banana can help you keep it light but filling.

Good tip - I always seem to get super hungry by 3 and lose control. Self-control is tough.

If you’re not really hungry, is it possible to skip going altogether? You could suggest your husband take the family while you stay in. If you’re going out, try to plan for it. I usually have a light meal earlier and check the menu in advance to pick something healthy. That way, I don’t feel as tempted once I get there.

One trick I learned from weight watchers is to ask the server to box up half of the meal before they bring it out. It keeps you from feeling tempted and helps you stick to portions.

I usually just decline. My family is small, so it’s not a big deal. When I was with roommates who ate late, I’d either not go, or I’d join, eat a bit, and save the rest for the next day. This way, I didn’t feel pressured to break my routine.

That sounds like a good approach - I might try ordering something to take home for the next day.

Maybe suggest a place that lists calorie counts. Then you can adjust based on what you need. Honestly, when my wife and I eat out, I just go with the flow once in a while. We don’t eat out much, so it’s easier to let it slide occasionally.

I just go, make a smart order, and enjoy myself. Usually something like a rice bowl with dressing on the side. I add a workout to balance things out if I can.

Are you getting big takeaways or calorie-heavy meals each time? If you’re on a diet, you may want to cut back to once a week. Some people plan their meals in advance, then enjoy a cheat meal that keeps them on track the rest of the time.

True, I know I need to stick to better habits. Planning and prepping might help me avoid slipping up.

I’ve been there. I used to get takeout all the time, but slowly cutting back made a big difference. Now I treat myself occasionally but stick to meal prep. It really helps. Try making it a gradual change.

@Raine
Thanks for the encouragement. I need to get into meal prep and be more structured. Hopefully, it’ll get easier with time.
