Hello, folks. My weight loss journey began in May 2022, when I reached an all-time high of 151 pounds. I got serious and began practicing CICO, calculating my calories, and following along with Fitness Blender YouTube exercises whenever I could. I’m also a single parent with a two-year-old. I haven’t had a period in almost two years because birth control has fully stopped it. I reached as low as 113 pounds last week. I was ecstatic since I was so close to my target weight.
I weighed 117.2 this morning. I also started my first period in a very long time. I’m cramping and bloated. But I don’t have an appetite; I’m physically forcing myself to eat and drink water because the notion of it makes me sick.
Is it common to gain 4 pounds of what I believe is water weight and retention due to my period? I’m expecting it’ll just shed and fall off by this time next week, but I’m also feeling discouraged and frustrated, as if all of my hard work was for nothing. Just checking to see if this has occurred to anyone else! Thanks!
Whenever I am menstruation or ovulating, my weight climbs by 3-5 pounds. As soon as it is finished, my weight returns to normal. Hormonal fluctuations/progesterone surges have a significant impact on water retention at various phases of the menstrual cycle. Once your cycle is complete, I am confident that your weight will revert to pre-period levels.
Yes, I never weigh myself during or before my period! I also wait a few days after my period ends before stepping on the scale to allow myself to “feel normal.” I experience awful cramps and gain an average of 5 pounds. I also have intense appetites, so I fall off the waggon easily. (I’m on my period now, mehhh)
Yes, hormonal water retention is terrible. If you’re lucky, it happens right around your period. Sometimes it happens twice a month, around menstruation and ovulation.
On the plus side, during menstruation, you may find it simpler to fast or eat less. I am famished during PMS, but as soon as my period begins, I lose my appetite for the duration.
Girl, sure! Your period can result in temporary weight gain. It will normally stabilise over time, and if you are still losing, you may experience a “bigger drop” after it is over. Don’t become discouraged. Stay the course.
