I am a 25-year-old woman, 5’3" and about 210 lbs. My healthy weight is around 135 lbs, and I want to get there eventually. I have always been heavier and not very active. I have had gym memberships before but never stuck with them. Now, I’m back at Planet Fitness and trying to motivate myself to go in because the gym is intimidating.
I bought a membership over the weekend and went for the first time on Monday. I spent an hour walking a mile on the treadmill at 2.5 mph and biking 4.5 miles on a recumbent bike at the lowest resistance.
I am out of shape and trying to build up my fitness gradually. I also have asthma (haven’t used an inhaler in years) and knee issues. I’m considering low-impact cardio like the stationary bike, rower, and maybe the stair climber, but I’m not sure if this is the right plan. What should I focus on for weight loss without overdoing it since I’m not used to being active?
The best gym equipment is the one you’ll consistently use. Keep in mind that weight loss mainly comes from your diet. If you’re new to the gym, it’s beneficial to have an experienced trainer to ensure proper form during lifts. For calorie burning, full-body exercises are ideal. Swimming and using the elliptical are more effective than a stationary bike. The Stairmaster is also great, as long as you’re not putting too much of your weight on the handles.
To improve your rowing technique, get guidance from a gym instructor or watch YouTube videos. Eliptical cross-trainers are beneficial, although the initial sensation is one of patting your head and caressing your abdomen. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to persevere.
Personally, I’m not a fan of simply committing to the gym. I believe you will have better “stickability” if you walk once a week, swim, go to the gym, or participate in an exercise class.
Don’t be concerned about others in the gym; most individuals are more engaged in themselves or are quite supportive. If you find the other users disrespectful and frightening, choose another club and notify Planet Fitness that you are leaving.
